Here’s a clever idea we wish was available on a mass market scale – a dreamy and restful rocking chair and cradle all in one. Baby sleeps while mama reads and rests, both rocking together. This adorable cradle + rocking chair pair, Rockid, was dreamed up by the savvy design team Ontwerpduo, made with coated birch ply wood. The cradle softly swings along with the chair, lulling everyone into a more peaceful place. As Baby outgrows his sleeping space, the team notes that the rockid can be reconstructed into a rocking chair.

HOW TO: Make Your Own Non-Toxic Baby Wipes

HOW TO: Make Your Own Non-Toxic Baby Wipes

Did you know that majority of baby wipes contain harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, parabens, phthalates and fragrances - which often hide other chemicals, such as phenoxyethanol and other yucky preservatives? Top name brand wipes have scored 3 to 8 on the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Database website for safety hazards. Even some wipes labeled natural or fragrance free have high scores of 4+. The problem for mainstream baby wipes? Any time there is water in a soap solution, preservatives are needed to inhibit mold and bacteria from growing. But when you use castile soap, no preservatives are needed since castile soap has a high enough PH to preserve itself. That's why soaps like Earth Mama Angel Baby and Dr. Bronner are non-toxic and make great baby wipe solutions. Read more on how you can make your own non-toxic baby wipes with a few simple ingredients!

Seattle Pushing to Make Breastfeeding a Civil Right

Seattle Pushing to Make Breastfeeding a Civil Right

A newly proposed law in Seattle could make it illegal to ask a nursing mother there to stop breastfeeding, to cover up or to move to another location. City council member Bruce Harrell, who introduced the law to make breastfeeding a civil right told KING 5 TV, “If we change cultural norms, that people realize it’s important to have a healthy Seattle, that people will breastfeed in public areas, it begins the conversation as to why.” Harrell also points out that a law like this may law help eliminate stigma, and encourage minority moms to breastfeed more, which would be good news since minorities statistically breastfeed less in the U.S. The city’s Office of Women’s Rights have reported that they receive many complaints from nursing mothers about breastfeeding discrimination in the workplace, stores, restaurants and public areas but if passed, the proposed law would mean it’s an act of discrimination to ask a woman to move or leave a location simply because she’s breastfeeding in public. The spirit behind this proposal should be applauded, but not everyone is clapping.

Why You Shouldn’t Swap Spit with Your Baby by Pre-Chewing His Food Like Alicia Silverstone

Why You Shouldn’t Swap Spit with Your Baby by Pre-Chewing His Food Like Alicia Silverstone

So, in case you missed it, there’s a video posted by Alicia Silverstone sweeping the YouTube scene right now. The video shows her feeding her baby, Bear, from her own mouth, much like a mama bird. With 1,532,937 views and counting, there’s no doubt that the video is popular, and in fact, most viewers at her own website, The Kind Life, were supportive and thought this was pretty darn cute, leaving comments like, “Alicia, I had never thought of this before but it’s the cutest way of feeding your baby! I have a 7 month old and I think I will try this method…she is always trying to lick my mouth anyways might as well give her a reward!” Some readers at Silverstone’s blog even commented that this was a “green” practice. But not everyone is on board with mama-to-baby food swapping, for example one YouTube viewer posts, “That is so gross I will never watch another movie with her in it.” Other viewers don’t like that she’s made vegans look odd, as one viewer writes, “Thanks a lot Alicia, for furthering the stereotype of vegan parents as being sick weirdos.” Silverstone, a vegan advocate, is helping to promote the vegan movement with her book and blog, but when it comes to oral hygiene, she may have missed the mark, because feeding your baby from your own mouth is a risky habit.

Would you swap food with your baby?

  • 20 Votes Yes - this is adorable and perfectly safe.
  • 21 Votes No - because this is gross.
  • 83 Votes No - because this isn't hygienic.

GREEN BOOK REVIEW: Beyond the Sling by Mayim Bialik

GREEN BOOK REVIEW: Beyond the Sling by Mayim Bialik

Unlike numerous child stars who seem to fade into oblivion or become fodder for gossip rags, Mayim Bialik has stayed out of trouble by diving into causes she is passionate about. She’s a mom of two, a neuroscience PhD, a Holistic Moms spokesperson, vegan and an attachment parenting advocate. Oh, and did we mention she can still be seen regularly on the TV hit The Big Bang Theory? Her latest venture is a book, Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way, about her decision to follow an attachment parenting style for raising her children. The book is written in an approachable, conversational tone. If you ever watched Blossom or Beaches (and how could you possibly grow up in the ’90s without having done so?), as you read this book you can easily imagine Bialik talking to you across the kitchen table, while sipping a soy latte perhaps. Divided into sections including elimination communication, babywearing, co-sleeping, when to use medical interventions, and how to avoid buying too much stuff for baby, the book touches on many “hot buttons” in parenting and are presented clearly, logically, and and always in Bialik’s confident voice, which at times turns humorous (such as when she discusses her surprise at just how often her firstborn wanted to be held) and very serious (such as when she is discussing her feelings on gentle discipline.)

Most SIDS Deaths Involve Multiple Risk Factors According to New Research

Most SIDS Deaths Involve Multiple Risk Factors According to New Research

The Back to Sleep (BTS) campaign, which kicked off in 1994, was wildly successful for the first ten years, reducing SIDS deaths by 50%. Then, rates of decline slowed and SIDS deaths have remained stable for some time. Many wonder why. If BTS is so successful, how come SIDS deaths are still the leading cause of postneonatal infant mortality in the United States and why haven’t these deaths declined more? Researchers conducted a new study in an attempt to figure this puzzle out by examining both intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors for SIDS. The researchers define an intrinsic risk factor for SIDS as a genetic or environmental factor – race, gender, prematurity or prenatal drug use for example – while extrinsic risks include physical stressors that may increase the risk of SIDS, such as co-sleeping, tummy sleeping, soft bedding, respiratory infections and smoking while co-sleeping. During the course of the study, researchers discovered that 99% of infants who died from SIDS had at least one intrinsic or extrinsic risk factor, 75% had at least one of each and a majority (57%) had at least two extrinsic risks and one intrinsic risk factor.

Mad Men Mom January Jones Eats Her Placenta In Pill Form

Mad Men Mom January Jones Eats Her Placenta In Pill Form

January Jones image from Shutterstock, Pills image from Fruit of the Womb

In our placenta eating poll, most Inhabitots’ readers noted that munching on a placenta didn’t rate high on their to-do list. However, in pill form, placenta seems much more palatable, even to popular celebrities like Mad Men’s January Jones. According to reports, January Jones recently revealed that eating her own placenta helped her make a successful return to the set of Mad Men just weeks after giving birth. Jones gave birth to her son Xander in September and decided to encapsulate her placenta and eat it after her dolua suggested it. Jones noted, “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas… It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!” Cool. We wonder if Jones is on board with breast milk cheese, too.

Would you (or did you) swallow your placenta in pill form?

  • 50 Votes Yes - it's natural and healthy
  • 26 Votes No way!
  • 25 Votes I might, but I'm not sure if it's really beneficial.
